RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC—The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is proud to announce the five recipients of its 2025 Career Award for STEM Teachers (CAST), which recognizes exceptional educators who demonstrate a deep commitment to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in North Carolina.
Each awardee will receive $175,000 over five years to enhance professional development and enrich STEM experiences for students in their classrooms, schools, and communities.
“These five teachers are leaders in their schools and champions of opportunity for their students,” said Alfred Mays, Chief Diversity Officer and senior program officer. “They demonstrate how a single educator can ignite a lifelong passion for STEM and open doors to future careers in STEM and innovation.”

Sallie B. Howard Charter
A dynamic STEM advocate who integrates hands-on learning and real-world problem-solving to inspire curiosity and confidence in young learners

Burke County Schools
A dedicated elementary educator who fosters inclusive and engaging science instruction, building strong foundations in STEM from an early age.

Known for his creativity and collaborative spirit, Haas brings innovative technology and engineering challenges into the classroom to spark student exploration.

Now in its 15th year, the Career Award for STEM Teachers supports outstanding North Carolina public school educators who have demonstrated excellence in STEM teaching and a strong record of leadership within their schools, districts, and regions.
The next CAST Award cycle will begin with an open application period in May 2026, with a deadline of October 2026.
